Circus 1903

Circus 1903
Concert Hall, Sydney Opera House, 21 - 29 December 2023, then Arts Centre Melbourne, State Theatre, from 4-14 January 2024.

Step right up, folks. The circus is in town! See the fantastic elephants and daredevil stunts as you dive back into yesteryear under the big top(sails)of Sydney’s Opera House. With our fascination for the circus reignited during recent years (thanks to a certain Mr Jackman and his cast of runaways running the night), it feels timely to revisit the greatest show and where better this Christmas than at the jewel of Sydney Harbour.

This is a circus with a difference set in (of all places) the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House. In a flash, however that is forgotten. The dazzling theatrical spectacle transports the audience to a bygone era of the grand and awe-inspiring circus performances of the early 20th century.

With a blend of nostalgia and modern theatrical innovation, 22 international performers capture the imagination and heart of the audience from start to finish, and it’s easy to see why this show has had international sellout seasons.

Weaving the narrative throughout the show is ringmaster Willy Whipsnade (David Williamson). He guides the audience through a series of vignettes with a perfect balance of humour, drama, and heart, creating moments of genuine connection with the audience.

We are treated to a diverse array of acts, from the acrobatic excellence of The Daring Desafios (Oskar Norin, Anton Persson and Karl Wiberg ) to The Elastic Dislocationist (Mekdes Kebede ) or the Ariel Ballet of The Flying Fredoni’s keeping the audience mesmerised, this is a testament to the timelessness of the circus as an art form.

As Act 1 concludes, the stunning set design, a beautifully crafted classic circus tent, is unveiled. This turn-of-the-century circus gathers pace and catapults the audience into Act 2. Accuracy is evident in every aspect, from the costuming to the props, creating a visually stunning experience as rehearsal becomes the show. Things move up another impressive notch with more jaw-dropping performances, including strongmen Yani Stoyanov and Valeri Tsvetkov, trapeze duo Yoann Benhamou and Emiline Goavec and juggler Francois Borie.

The sensational cast, whose exceptional talent and skill bring the spirit of the circus to life with each act, performs with precision and grace. The costumes are exquisitely detailed, from street clothes to the opulent. The music, composed specifically for the show, complements the action on stage with its melodies and stirring rhythms.

This show will appeal to audiences of all ages. It offers an experience that is as enchanting and magical as it is exhilarating. It is a testament to the dedication and artistry of the performers and a showcase of the remarkable capabilities of the human body.

The show-stopping moment comes from a loveable elephant, Queenie, and her calf, Peanut, brought to life by skilled puppeteers Chris Milford, James Donovan Smith, Mikey Brett and Nyron Levy. Their ability to capture the grace and character of these gentle giants was uncanny, and the audiences ooh-ed and aah-ed watching them frolic about.

In an age of high-tech entertainment and digital distractions, Circus 1903 is a welcome reminder of the enduring power of live performance and the timeless appeal of the circus. It celebrates the spirit of human achievement and ingenuity and pays homage to a rich cultural tradition while breathing new life into the art form for contemporary audiences.

Whether you are a longtime admirer of the circus or a newcomer to its wonders, this is certainly a spectacle. Believe the unbelievable—a world of wonder and excitement. Circus 1903 is magic 5-star entertainment.

Circus 1903 is currently playing at the Sydney Opera House until 29 December 2023.
