David Gauci: It Was Worth The Weight

David Gauci: It Was Worth The Weight
Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Artspace. June 5 & 6, 2015

David Gauci is perhaps Adelaide’s best kept secret. A powerhouse of a man, full of personality and self-effacing humour, he is what cabaret is all about. Accompanied by the young and very talented Josh Belperio, Gauci taps into the dreamer in all of us. With an eclectic mix of songs from musical theatre to the classics, he makes them relevant to the young boy with a dream who simply did not ever give up.

A collection of small props and witty banter between Belporio and himself produces some of the most hilarious moments of the evening. He retells his experiences as a wedding singer and shares with us some of the challenges he has faced being the ‘elephant’ in the room. I quote him on this.

Performing to a sold-out audience, he sings from the heart and you immediately feel that you are witnessing something special. Like spending an evening with an old friend, Gauci draws you in with his humour and sincerity; capturing a vulnerability that could only come from experiencing hard times.

Showcasing their writing skills, Gauci and Belporio close with a song that tickles the funny bone and pulls at the heart strings. Appealing to the dreamer in us all, Gauci reminds us of the importance of self-acceptance and resilience.

Gauci has produced an evening of fine entertainment and was deserved of his standing ovation.
