Delius

Delius
Written and directed by C. Aspden Pomfret. KADS. Kalamunda Town Square Theatre. May 10 - 25, 2019

Delius is a World Premiere production, written and directed by local author C. Aspen Pomfret, about the last few years of English composer Frederick Delius, his assistant or amanuensis Eric Fenby and Delius’ wife, German artist, Jelka Rosen.

Geoff Miethe is convincing and likeable as the blind, paralysed, syphilitic and unlikeable Delius, fluent and flowing in a very wordy role. A very believable relationship was developed between Delius and Eric Fenby, his much put-upon assistant, played with depth and sensitivity by Tennessee Buti. Karin Staflund was very strong as Jelka, in a thoughtful, moving performance.

Sage Lockyer as Hanna, and Kym Norris as both Carla and Hildegard (the latter being a last minute replacement), worked well in supporting roles.

The passing of time was well portrayed on Martin Dorman and Peter Bloor’s highly detailed set, by active stage management (Lesley Broughton) and frequent changes of floral display. Lighting and sound (Mark Ramsey, Julie Hickling and Anita Bound) was poignant and well employed, although hearing more of Delius’ music may have been nice

Lovely to see a well constructed new play, with an interesting story. A great choice for lovers of classical music, those who enjoy new theatre and people who enjoy a play with interesting relationships.
