Dirty Birds

Dirty Birds
By Hayley McElhinney and Mandy McElhinney. Black Swan State Theatre Company of WA. Directed by Kate Champion. Heath Ledger Theatre, State Theatre Centre of WA. Nov 18 - Dec 18, 2023

The McElhinney sisters, Hayley and Mandy, appear together on stage for the first time, in this beautifully performed, self-written World Premiere.

This ambiguous two-hander explores play, memory and ritual, and is performed on a set by designer Bruce McKinnon that evokes images of childhood funny houses - it looks cosy and simple but seems to be made of cardboard - and potentially able to collapse at any time. Lighting, designed by Paul Jackson is intimate and emotive, and sound design and composition by Rachael Dease is organic and heartfelt.

Our characters appear to be forced to leave their quaint and simple home, but can’t seem to do what they need to do, to take any action at all. Reflection, re-enactment, and numerous cups of tea are undertaken, but the characters seem to be trapped in inertia.

Reliant on strong relationships and excellent characterisation, this is a highly watchable play - even when its meaning is not always clear, due to genuine and heartfelt performances from the two performers. Obviously passionate about their own work, which explores, in part their own family’s Irish heritage and Catholicism, this is a performance where feelings run deep.

A great choice for those who love the oblique, people who enjoy strong female lead drama, and people passionate about seeing something new.
