The Edge

The Edge
By Nick Choo. Catface Productions. Directed by Levon J Polinelli. The Blue Room Theatre, Northbridge, WA. 29 May - 16 June, 2018

The Edge is unusual in that the central character, Josh, is never seen. We learn a lot about Josh in the two hour show. Josh is the favourite son of his mother; his brother feels the burden of caring for him; he has found a close friend in the café in which he works; his former flat mate has a crush on him; he has had the same best friend since childhood and he has recently proposed to his girlfriend. Josh is a high achiever, very artistic, but is also very troubled and is living on 'the edge'.

The Edge premiered in Malaysia, the birthplace of writer Nick Choo, a couple of years ago. Catface Productions' Australian Premiere is an updated version of this small cast, non-linear musical, which deals with serious themes including the complicated nature of relationships, depression and suicide.

Claudia Van Zeller brings a powerhouse voice and a great deal of sensitivity to Josh's mother Lily.  Josh's brother Jarod is played by Emerson Brophy in a performance of great depth that highlights the difficulties of caring for a family member with mental illness.

Phillip Lynch's laconic relaxed Michael and Tate Bennet's light-hearted, love-lorn Ryan both tread a careful path between serious issues and providing some gentle comic relief, in beautifully sung performances.

Madeleine Shaw is a sweet-voiced Deanna, movingly portraying the quandary of a young woman whose relationship is moving too fast, while Grace Johnston is lovely as caring and lonely café-worker April.

Simply but effectively staged and costumed, the show is accompanied, in an adjoining room by a live band.

Nick Choo's book and music reveal a good raconteur whose songs are beautiful and emotive, in a well constructed story. Given the sensitive subject matter, this show will not for be for everyone, but if you enjoy new musicals, this an ultimately uplifting, interesting and beautiful new show.
