Fairybread

Fairybread
Book by Ben Thomas and Jackson Used, music by Jackson Griggs and lyrics by Cal Silberstein. Fringe World / sandpaperplane. Bento Box, Noodle Palace, Northbridge, WA. Jan 20-22, 2017

At first Fairybread appears to be about a group of friends having a 'last supper' before they part ways for a while. Gradually it is revealed that not all is what it seems in this complex and clever new musical by sandpaperplane.

With a book by company founders Ben Thomas and Jackson Used, music by Jackson Griggs and lyrics by Cal Silberstein, this show explores keeping in touch when one doesn’t know what to say.

Central character Elliot is well played by Thomas Owen. Not the most likeable of protagonists, this may have been a problem for the show in the hands of a lesser actor, but Owen gives the character a certain vulnerability and the audience bond with him.

Strong support comes from the ensemble cast. Lauren Meyer makes a sophisticated, efficient Rose, Zoe Everett is lovely as lively athlete Naomi and Madeline Crofts is likeable as sweet, gentle Anna. Luke Wilson brings charm and a gorgeous voice to the role of Jack. The songs are beautifully written and expertly performed.

Accompanied by a five-piece band, the production moves smoothly through the slightly surreal plot.

The cast coped well with the minute Bento stage, with the set of sorts being a good choice. The tiny chairs used to save space, may have created sightline problems in this flat, long and narrow theatre-space.

Fairybread is a strong and different show that deserves a future beyond this three night season.
