Geraldine Quinn MDMA: Modern Day Maiden Aunt

Geraldine Quinn MDMA: Modern Day Maiden Aunt
Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Melbourne Town Hall 27 Mar - 20 April, 2014

Geraldine Quinn is the very model of a Modern Day Maiden Aunt. As a trained actor and self-taught songwriter she draws on her relationships with her 6 siblings and 19 nieces and nephews as the basis for this very funny one-woman show.

She shares her experience growing up in Noble Park in a big family, her observations on parenting styles and the advantages and disadvantages of being a maiden aunt who happens to be a an actor/singer/songwriter touring comedy festivals and fronting a rock band.

Her witty comments and sometimes very bawdy humour are beautifully delivered and the narrative peppered with her original songs, which expand our understanding and leave us admiring her range and delivery.  She talks and sings about warning her nieces about the dangers of posting “those” photos on the social media and shares her frustration with new mothers oversharing on Facebook. The comedy is also underpinned by pathos as she talks and sings about the fear of getting older and who will look after her.

The staging in the tiny room was very well done; simple props and an excellent use of a very basic lighting rig supported the performance beautifully.

Geraldine Quinn is a ballsy red head with a great voice and skill as a storyteller with both words and music.
