Girls’ Weekend

Girls’ Weekend
By Karen Schaeffer. The Players Theatre, Ballina. Director: Fran Legge, Assist: Liz van Eck. 19th – 28th March, 2021

Ballina’s first offering for 2021 is a frothy comedy.

As the title suggests it’s a Girls’ Weekend but before long (through a series of secret assignations) a number of gentlemen appear and the merry romp begins.

The plot - four members of a book club gather to ‘discuss’ the chosen ‘tome of the week’. Like many plots in this genre, the first act is a little flat as the characters and their connection to the story are introduced.

But the plot thickens in Act Two as ‘all hell breaks loose’ due to a heavy snowstorm which finds the four women and their respective love interests dodging in and out of a bedroom, closet, kitchen, and anywhere else that they hope won’t be discovered.

Timing is everything in a situation of this nature (not that I have ever been caught up anything like this!) and with all the to-ing and fro-ing, the opening and closing of the various doors was spot on!

The cast is a mixture of Ballina regulars with a smattering of new talent: Dot, the hostess (Suzi Rosedale), Meg, a fellow club member (Kristen Lodge), and Carol also a member (Candace Baldwin), Meg’s daughter Ellie (Sophie Robertson) and the male love interests (Brian Pamphilon, Liam Gatt, Alexander Plummer and Brian Alston).

Technical support, costumes and the set all added to the enjoyment of the evening.
