Heathers – The Musical

Heathers – The Musical
By Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe. Spotlight Theatre, Benowa, Gold Coast. Director & Choreographer: Jamie Watt. May 25 – Jun 16, 2018

Advertised as “RESTRICTED MA 15+”, it took very little time to realise why! The subject matter was confronting as were many of the numerous dance routines.

As the three “Heathers” (pictured), Zoe Richards, Tenele Storm Graham and Carla Beard were the “bitchiest” females that I can recall ever having to deal with. The object of this “class warfare” was Veronica, brilliantly portrayed by Genevieve Tree and her-self appointed, twisted protector, evilly brought to life by Dylan Hodge. The many supporting characters all added their individual slant on life in an American High School.

The production was in the in the capable hands of Jamie Watt – Director and Choreographer and Musical Director Julie Whiting. The set and props were easily adapted to convey the many scenes throughout the show.

An updated lighting grid added to the brilliance of the fast-paced action and the energy throughout the show.

There were several occasions where the orchestra dominated the vocals but that will, no doubt, be rectified. Also diction in both the lyrics and dialogue at times seemed to come off second: with a show that is unfamiliar it is essential for all the words to be enunciated for the benefit of the audience to follow the plot.

All in all: a great production but really not my scene.
