I thought I was not alone

I thought I was not alone
Part of the Made in Canberra series. Performed by Sydney Creswick and Fresh Funk. Arranged by Joe McEvilly. The Street Theatre. 1 – 2 November, 2013

Canberra band Sidney Creswick teamed up with Tuggeranong dance troupe Fresh Funk and Melbourne jazz composer Joe McEvilly in this sweet show, which is exactly what it sounds like: funk moves set to a live rock band. The audience were encouraged to keep their phones on, take photos and post updates to The Street’s Facebook page.

Sidney Creswick has an eclectic sound, with a line up including acoustic and electric guitars, trumpet, keyboards, drums and an acoustic double base. Opening with gentle, ambient chords and acoustic guitar mimicking natural rhythms – heart-beat, waves and wind – the intro segues into a 3/4 piece reminiscent of Mumford and Sons, featuring a laid-back, jazzy trumpet played by Tom Sly. The sound moved into heavier territory with a firebrand preacher-inspired Speaking of Sin. Some songs are reminiscent of Doors from their The End phase, while others (Black is the Colour of my True Love’s Hair) are simple love ballads and break up songs, through which Arlene Fletcher’s sumptuous double bass resonated. Liam Budge has a balladeer’s voice and sings with a simple heartfelt conviction. Joe McEvilly’s string arrangements added a soulful depth.

Fresh Funk’s choreography complemented the music with moves alternating between sensuous flow, lighting fast moves and muscular poses, following the narratives of the lyrics. Some of the dancers' flexibility was breathtaking. It was a great night and I hope The Street will be encouraging more Canberra collaborations.
