IDENTITÉ

IDENTITÉ
Judith Wright Centre, Brisbane. Flipside Circus. 10 -13 April, 2013

This show has the WOW! Factor.

A mix of amazing talents and mostly familiar circus skills presented with a twist: gymnastics and tumbling; juggling; human pyramids; trapeze; hula hoops; ingenious choreography; popular classical music and a great sense of fun and entertainment, IDENTITÉ is an hour of delight.

At times, acts incorporate potential danger that freeze us momentarily, then release our amazement at how skilfully the death-defying moment was avoided. (This company works with a mat but no safety nets.)

I take my hat off to those who train and coach these 9 to 19 year-olds to meet the risks head-on, and with cheeky smiles. I doubt these performers appreciate the personal development they achieve in the hands of these masters but by adulthood it will become obvious to them. Even the youngest, cheekiest little fellows have learnt to face an audience and play them like comedy masters, using the simplest props ─ in this show, little suitcases. Luggage – suitcases, hat cases, music cases, brief and attaché cases of all sizes and types – were the uniting symbol of the show. There’s never a dull moment; at any time there were up to four acts performing onstage simultaneously.

The collective potential among these fourteen performers is prodigious!
