Jesus Christ Superstar

Jesus Christ Superstar
By Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Presented by Sneddon Hall and Gallop and Pee Wee Productions. Directed by Stephen Pike. AIS Arena, Canberra. June 2 – 7, 2015

The arena production of Jesus Christ Superstar is a spectacular feast of sound and vision that thrills the senses and confronts the soul. The director Stephen Pike has brought out the soul of the story, with consistently good characterisation shown throughout, and he has used every part of the set, giving points of interest at all times, which is important in such a large venue. The chorus show commitment and talent in every part they play. Ian McLean is the maestro who has brought a fine musical vision to his music direction, showing how good the new orchestration (featuring more strings) can be. Great care has been taken with all vocal aspects, and kudos to Sharon Tree (vocal coach and assistant director) and Matthew Webster (repetiteur).

Chris Neal has shown excellent and imaginative sound design and management (the final minutes will stay in my memory for a long time). The set design by Brian Sudding and Phil Goodwin gives the performers space to move and this is highlighted by the creative and fascinating lighting design by Phil Goodwin. The lights fill the enormous stage, yet capture the still, quiet moments very effectively.

Luke Kennedy plays the part of Jesus, with a strong voice that also captures subtle shadings as well. Michael Falzon plays the part of Judas and sounds assured in the entire range of emotions that he must display. The role of Simon Zealotes is played by Will Huang with brio and Gordon Nicholson makes an unforgettable King Herod. Jenna Roberts plays the part of Mary and her beautiful voice and charming stage presence are an asset to the production.

Jordan Kelly has created a wonderful range of choreographic pieces to fit in with the director’s vision and to use the many skills of the chorus members. Standouts include “Superstar” and “King Herod’s Song”.

Although Canberra is experiencing a cold week, I recommend braving the chilly night air and going to see this show. Don’t miss it!
