Kitty Flanagan Smashing

Kitty Flanagan Smashing
Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Athenaeum Theatre, 188 Collins St, Melbourne. 10-22 April, 2018.

Kitty Flanagan’s sharp wit and astute cultural observations are finely tuned in this ‘smashing’ show. Flanagan mocks everything from fashionable words, personal relationships, and intimacy to our contemporary internet obsessed life. She leaves no stone unturned when it comes to highlighting bizarre and often less than graceful behaviour in our society, and Flanagan mimics this with incredible precision. Her energy and vibrancy produce non-stop hilarious humour which is intelligent and biting.

Flanagan’s personable stage presence is aided by her willingness to share private information and this makes her humour extremely relatable. She attacks taboo topics with candour and goes directly to the heart of a vast range of important issues. Her observations on a generation that is being schooled about sex by a proliferate amount of internet pornography is particularly incisive.

Highlights of the show also include Flanagan’s idea of the best way to find compatible partners. Rather than looking for common likes she believes identifying the things that you despise is a much better approach. Flanagan develops the concept of trigger words, phrases and places as things that elicit memories of things you hate. These are exquisite examples of her unique brand of humour.

The show ends with a musical performance accompanied by her sister, Penny Flanagan on guitar. This brings the performance to a delightful and energetic conclusion that is testament to her incredible talent.
