Kosher Bacon

Kosher Bacon
By Michael Shafar. Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2018 (VIC). Trades Hall. March 29 - April 22, 2018

Michael Shafar is Jewish, 27, and writes for The Project. As such, he’s capable of quick-witted quips about today’s hot topics.

When he steps on the stage — tall, good-looking, commanding — Shafar starts by questioning his audience about themselves. Jewish or non-Jewish? Married? Family?

Shafar rarely singles audience members out. Instead, he makes sure everyone feels the show is being explicitly performed for them.

Shafar offers comedic interpretations of themes including marriage, schmeckle shots, ISIS, the dumbness of doctors, racism, and his mother’s homicidal tendencies.

Shafar performs comedy as if he’s dancing. He steps between his script and improvisation like a dancer who never missteps.

His earlier work in getting to know the audience pays off as he creates inside jokes, by making more and more references to earlier jokes as the show progresses.

At its core, Kosher Bacon explores the illogical way we leap from experiencing a mundane event to forming an unshakeable belief.

As suggested in the name, Kosher Bacon appeals to Jews and non-Jews. You will enjoy yourself because Shafar will get to know you and base his comedy around you.
