Leather Lungs: Happy Ending

Leather Lungs: Happy Ending
Created and performed by Leather Lungs (Jason Chasland). Festival Hub: Trades Hall – Common Rooms. Cnr Lygon and Victoria Sts. Carlton. 12 - 15 October, 2023

Leather Lungs’ voice begins the show and it is truly impressive. So is the energy Leather Lungs brings to the stage. There are lots of salacious quips and adult smut mixed in with painful sharing of their relationship journey. There’s plenty to laugh about in the descriptions of the fumbling relationships with a dentist, and a person from Australia’s most wanted list but then the mood turns serious when the coercive and controlling narcissist arrives. Leather Lungs gives tribute to their family and the help others gave to help them through this difficult situation.

Surrounding all of this is a voice good for belting out a range of the classics including an upbeat version of “Old MacDonald Had A Farm”, “Unchained Melody”, “Hero”, “Winner Takes It All” and a audience participations version of “You’re The Voice”. These are all managed with a good deal of pizazz and the stylistic approach is flexible and appropriate to each song.

Leather Lungs’ asides and patter are delivered at breakneck pace and are sometimes quite difficult to understand. The rest of the sound is excellent and the lighting adds just the right tone.

This show is a tribute to the human spirit and the simple joy of being really good at something and generously sharing it.
