Livvy and Pete

Livvy and Pete
La Cascadeur. Adelaide Fringe. 6-19 March 2017

Well I have to say, any show that has my very quiet ‘plus one’ clapping and singing along must be an amazing one. Livvy and Pete is a joyful ride - some of which is even on roller skates! Michael Griffiths and Amelia Ryan demonstrated yet again why they are so loved by Adelaide audiences. Their chemistry and team-work, coupled with buckets of talent, make for a fun night out at the Fringe.

A sell-out opening night audience lapped up every Olivia Newton John and Peter Allen song and one could feel the air of nostalgia in the venue on the night. Michael, dressed in classic Allen style floral shirt and white pants, opens the show singing ‘I am not the boy next door’ and is soon joined by Ryan, resplendent in a black skin tight outfit, in a duet of this number - a powerhouse introduction!

During the night, we are treated to storytelling about the two performers’ lives and even a peephole into the lives of Griffiths and Ryan as well. They keep the show moving with well-scripted, sometimes funny, sometimes sad, banter. Michael Griffiths, on keyboard, shows his usual mastery of a song and his consummate storytelling ability. Amelia Ryan has a beautiful voice and powerful belt, as well as a comedic physical style that has the audience in stitches.

It was delightful to see the use of an autoharp and various other percussion instruments throughout the show. Some highlights are Griffiths singing ‘Tenterfield Saddler’, with respectful understanding of the meaning of the song, and in complete contrast, Ryan’s insanely funny ‘Let’s Get Physical’ in 80’s lycra aerobics gear, with audience participation.

Audience members are also treated to ‘Arthur’s Song’, ‘I Honestly Love You’ and a series of Grease songs, with the audience enthusiastically screeching out woo hoo hoo’s and the beautiful (should be our national anthem) ‘I Still Call Australia Home’.

The finale of the show is a combination of ‘Xanadu’ (Ryan on skates!) and ‘I go to Rio’, where Griffith’s final costume is a flaming glory!

The audience loved this show and were with Ryan and Griffiths all the way. Do not miss seeing Livvy and Pete at the Fringe!
