The Marvellous Wonderettes

The Marvellous Wonderettes
Creators: Roger Bean and Brian William Baker. Basement Theatre, Spotlight Benowa, Gold Coast. Director: Katie Steuart-Robins. Sept 21st – Oct 7th, 2018

One could be forgiven for thinking that when a Musical has a cast of 4, no set, just a static backdrop, props that include 4 free standing microphones and a cootie catcher – that it may be that you're in for a long night.  Oh - and a piece of chewing gum!

Au contraire! as the French Teacher would say – The Marvellous  Wonderettes at Spotlight Theatre were wonderful. Right from the get go they displayed their characters for all to see. From the opening number, through 30 + songs from the 50's and 60's, and what great songs they are.

The harmonies were delightful, the characterisation hilarious; but the big hats off moment - for me - goes to choreography.  Erin Brummage take a bow – the girls did you proud, and I don't think they missed a beat. The Girls: Missy – Olivia Chilvera-French, Suzy – Rachel Love, Betty-Jean – Amber Rosalie and Cindy-Lou – Dana White.

Katie Steuart-Robins, as Director, has had a meteoric rise from 'just a cast member” in 2014, to a very busy, successful Director – well done Katie – a thoroughly enjoyable show.

The only negative for me was that the sound didn't appear to be sharp. However, I got so caught up in my walk down memory lane, right down to the dress from Act II, which I'm sure I wore in 1966, that I hardly noticed it.

Wonderettes – you were indeed MARVELLOUS!!

Don't miss it!
