Miranda

Miranda
By Peter Blackmore. Garrick Theatre, Guildford, WA. Nov 27-Dec 13 2014

Miranda, directed by Rodney Palmer at the Garrick Theatre, is a very nice looking production, that tells its story well.

When aristocratic doctor Paul Marten finds a mermaid, while fishing in Cornwall, he decides to bring her to his London flat disguised as an invalid. This decision causes no end of consternation.

Rhett Clarke is a convincing Sir Paul, although is difficult to hear at times. Mary Murphy is elegant and sympathetic as central character Lady Clare.

Natalie Aung Then was seductive and looked divine as mermaid Miranda. She becomes a love rival to the lovely Isobel Lambert played beautifully by Tayla Howard and the delightful servant Betty, well played by Belinda Djurdjevic.

Director Rodney Palmer also played chauffeur Charles, in a lovely appearance and Christine Ellis as eccentric Nurse Carey and Brendan Ellis as Isobel's artist fiancé completed the cast.

Set in affluent society in post-war London, the set was for the most part accurate to the era and Lynda Stubbs' costuming was simply gorgeous. Clayton Reichert's lighting design added atmosphere and a lovely sense of time.

Despite a late start to the show on its final performance, Miranda was worth the wait and was an enjoyable show.
