OOL

OOL
By Max Barton. Directed by Max Barton. Victoria Hall, Fremantle, WA. Mar 8-23, 2024

OOL, our solo performer Max Barton tells us, is the result of eight years’ work with theatre collaborators from all over the world. Using the wealth of knowledge from the collaborators, scientists, and great thinkers, we will see life-changing theatre as we explore OOL-the Origins of Life, as part of simultaneous performances all around the world.

But the collaborative has made some changes and Max isn’t happy about them.

An interesting, often surprising one-person-show that explores one person’s humanity against the world’s biggest problems, its success lies in Max’s gentle humour, rapid-fire transitions, and an easy relationship with the audience.

Not for those who like their theatre linear or comfortable, this mix of music, monologue and storytelling is quite often “out of the box”.

As much of this show relies on unexpected turns, I am reluctant to say too much, but this show is fresh, interesting, and very different to most theatre.

Creatively lit by Kat Johnston, Max Barton is supported by real-life operator and stage manager Arran O’Mara playing Stage Manager Frankie, apparently ever-patient, but ever so slightly annoyed - a stellar little cameo.

A show to see with someone who loves to dissect a show. This is thought-provoking and sure to provoke discussion over a drink post show.
