Reconcile

Reconcile
By Boyname. The Blue Room Theatre, Perth Cultural Centre. June 6–17, 2023

Reconcile is one of the most vulnerable pieces of theatre you will see this year. An autobiographical performance piece, performed by creator Boyname, it is a physical theatre work without words.

Sensitively choreographed by Bobby Russell, this performance art tells the story of a performer coming to terms with their own identity and body and finding queer self-acceptance. Boyname Is a trans-performance artist and their journey has obviously been a difficult one. While not easy watching, it is moving, with great impact.

Highly visceral, this work comes with a sensory warning list that is longer than the show and I suggest potential audience members take it seriously. This is loud (earplugs are provided) and George Ashford's lighting design includes extensive flashing sequences, which while very effective may also be too much for some audience members. The overwhelming sensations in this play are probably a very good sensory representation of the sensation of being trapped in the wrong body but may make it unsuitable for some people.

Boyname is a consummate performer and their honesty and commitment to this story make this compelling viewing. An honest and raw production, with high production values.
