Sense and Spontaneity

Sense and Spontaneity
Fringe World. Directed by Jessica Messenger and Esther Longhurst. Circus Theatre, Fringe Central, Perth, WA. Feb 21-25, 2018

It is rare to see a show that has audience appeal from the 'under tens' to the 'over eighties', but Sense and Spontaneity is ticking this box with its warm and funny, improvised Jane Austen romp.

Performers, best friends Jessica Messenger and Esther Longhurst, chat to the audience in search of a story - on the performance I attended, they asked best friend pairs,  “How did you meet your best friend?”. They ran with the fact that one of the besties in the audience was too shy to join her friend on the stage, and we were treated to a recently discovered, unpublished Austen novel about Isabella Derbyshire, a shy young lady who hides in the corner at parties.

There was a trip to the continent, mixed up lovers, some rap and a whole lot of bonnets. Your experience may vary - except for the bonnets. I guarantee you will get bonnets.

Esther Longhurst and Jessica Messenger are excellent improvisors with a beautiful down to earth manner and the show is simply a delight.

I also recommend checking out their (viral) youtube video “Dear Mr Darcy” as some pre or post show viewing. It gives a taste of the style and talents of these young ladies.

To meet the best-bred young ladies at FringeWorld and to become better acquainted with Jane Austen, catch Sense and Spontaneity in its final days at FringeWorld. Sense and Spontaneity will also travel to the Adelaide Fringe.
