Son of A Preacher Man - The Dusty Springfield Story.

Son of A Preacher Man - The Dusty Springfield Story.
Performed by Mel Djuric. Speakeasy HQ, Apollo Theatre (Vic). January 18 - March 31, 2018.

Even 19 years after her death, Dusty Springfield remains popular.

The hour-long Son of a Preacher Man - The Dusty Springfield Story includes many of Springfield’s most popular classics: ‘Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?’, ‘You’re Just Too Good to be True’, and the titular ‘Son of a Preacher Man’.

Alongside the classics are one or two surprises.

Apart from the performance, it’s the factoids that Djuric shares with the audience that helps you learn about Springfield.

Dusty Springfield remains relevant today and I don’t think it’s just because of her talent.

She possessed a humanity and vulnerability as she struggled with her sexuality at a time when non-normative sexualities were unacceptable. Her struggle then is our struggle today.

Before she sang ‘Wishing and Hoping’, Djuric shared that it was her favourite. The confidence and warmth she brought to her version of the song makes it the highlight of the show.

Without giving away the song, the finale was an unexpected choice. Rather than ending with one of Springfield’s power ballads, The reason for the choice: it’s a favourite of Djuric’s sister.

This show is a great introduction for those yet to discover Dusty Springfield,
