Curtin University’s Theatre Arts and the Hayman Theatre Company presents their 2023 Stage One Production, which is ’traditionally” staged at the Blue Room, the World Premiere of Takeaway. This black comedy, set in the back room of a pizza restaurant, is “about how the more things change, the more they stay the same”.

This is an engaging show with interesting, quirky characters that resonate with the audience. Cleverly written, this story about young restaurant workers with varying backgrounds and dreams could almost be the pilot of a new television series, with its strong sense of community and interesting blend of comedy and big issues.

Thoughtfully directed by Emily McLean, this is an ensemble piece that features a dynamic cast of eight creating some interesting characters - all of whom are flawed but likeable and interesting. Kate Taunton-Morgan has lovely authority as manager Lou, Analisa Cicchini gives high power energy to the opinionated Charity, Tiandra Seal wins sympathy as wise and mature Clem, while Thomas Cartwright is gorgeously awkward as Vas. Keely Johnston is strong as combative waitress with a dream Tyler, Emelie Tiivel is quietly effective and impressive as chef Darcy, Tom Ford aces machine gun-delivery and both comedy and pathos as Danny, with Zoe Marciano lovely as new girl Alma - who is absorbed into this strange little community with the audience.

Adam Gannon gives us a functional set design with good attention to detail, lit with emotional intelligence by Hayley Smith. Megan Mak’s costume design allowed twists on uniforms to reveal character (although some of the costumes were looking a little worse for wear mid-run), with effective sound design from Alex and Yell.

An enjoyable new show that, despite some very dark turns, is enjoyable to watch thanks to some good writing and nicely crafted performances.
