Talking Heads

Talking Heads
By Alan Bennett. Fringe World. Lady Beaufort, Beaufort St Community Centre, Mt Lawley, WA. Feb 2-18, 2018

Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads are a series of monologues that are familiar to many, as they were televised. In this presentation, by Wild Capers, also known as Dunsborough Theatre Group, we see “Her Big Chance” and “Bed Among the Lentils”.

“In Her Big Chance”, Sarah Barclay plays Linda, an aspiring actress, whose experience consists of extras roles in movies and TV. We follow what she believes will be her ‘big break’ as good-time girl Travis in a film to be distributed in the German and Turkish markets. It is obvious to the audience, but not necessarily Linda, that the film is low budget, soft porn. Sarah Barclay is an engaging performer, with a lovely warmth and winning smile. The audience find themselves loving this consciously naive performance.

“Bed Among the Lentils” tells of Susan, an alcoholic, awkward vicar’s wife, who needs to sneak into Leeds to buy alcohol. Susan develops a relationship with a much younger Indian shopkeeper, finding romance and eventually herself. Tricia Mothersole gives a compelling performance as Susan, with a wonderful characterisation and beautifully layered performance.

Wonderful to see a country community theatre company represented in Fringe World, in a show that deserves wider audiences. Lady Beaufort is an intimate venue, so book early and perhaps pair it with one of the venue’s other female focused productions.
