Tarzan

Tarzan
Music and lyrics by Phil Collins. Book by David Henry Hwang. Stray Cats Theatre Company. Directed by Karen Francis. Mandurah Performing Arts Centre, WA. 11-14 October, 2018

The Western Australian premiere of Tarzan burst into live in a very lavish production, presented by Stray Cats Theatre Company and Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.

The jungle of Western Africa is gorgeously recreated in a highly detailed set designed by Bronwyn White and Karen Francis, with projection by Alan White, establishing high production values from the outset. Costumes are also impressive, with makeup, by team led by Jodie Mars, giving credence to the gorilla characters.

Jake Garner is strong in the title role, giving depth and complexity to the man raised by apes. His younger self is played nicely by Angus Thomson.

Vocal Director Kristie Gray creates a wonderfully maternal Kala, who adopts Tarzan, and has a complex relationship with her husband and head of the family group, Kerchak (a moving performance by Robert Sardua). Best friend Terk is played with vivacious energy by a very likeable Bailey Bridgman-Peters. There is strong support from a large tribe of gorillas (much of the cast of 72), who add colour and personality. Choreography by Leanne Driel caters well to broad abilities and uses the stage well.

Love interest Jane is given great sensitivity and a lovely voice by Emily Lambert. Her father quickly establishes himself as an audience favourite, in a very nicely balanced comedic performance by Paul Hayward. Villainous Clayton was well played by Harry Stacey in a strong performance that belies his youth.

In smaller roles, Ryan White is strong as Snipes, Dean Moran moves brilliantly as the leopard (and stands out in the ensemble) and Brendan Geuer and Asha Perry set the show in motion with lovely albeit brief appearances as Tarzan’s parents.

Musical Director Vanitha Hart leads a live band that sounds superb.

A feel-good production that looked and sounded top notch brought joy to large audiences. Lovely to see a solid new show!
