A Taste of Ireland

A Taste of Ireland
Presented by Pace Live. The Palms at Crown, Level 3, Crown Melbourne, 8 Whiteman Street, Southbank Melbourne. Sunday 17 March 2024.

This delightful performance is touring across Australia (April – June) and showcases the unique dance style of Ireland and its enormous crossover with other genres. The extremely talented ensemble of singers, dancers and musicians provide engaging and fun-filled entertainment. Much of the Irish humour is infused into each number and this is combined with a captivating youthful effervescence.

The fast pace and sharp rhythm of the dancing creates impressive visuals and sounds. The incredible precision and unity also demonstrate great discipline and skill. The incorporation of movements which suggest tap and ballet gives the dancing great energy and grace. Principal dancers, Brittany Pymm and Mitchell O'Hara expertly led the dance ensemble and provided some stunning performances.

The vibrant costumes reflect the enthusiasm of the performers and much of the costume design is aimed at evoking Irish culture. This is reiterated in the set and lighting which has many Celtic references. This is accompanied by the projection of archival images of a range of important social and political events in Irish history. The choice of songs is aimed at tugging at the heartstrings as classic songs such as Danny Boy, performed by Tynan Fuller, are delivered with emotion and gusto. The presence of live music adds to the evocative atmosphere; Megan McGinley on the fiddle and instrumental guitarist, Simon Lace, have numerous occasions to flaunt their great talent. For Irish members of the audience this was a great opportunity to indulge in nostalgia.

Some contextualisation of the music, dancing and cultural references would have been beneficial for the non-Irish members of the audience. The venue seems somewhat at odds with this show which requires a location that encourages and facilitates more intimacy and connection with the audience.

This is a show that will appeal to those longing for the opportunity to enjoy the uniqueness of Irish culture and its enchanting ability to captivate and embrace the audience.
