[Title of Show]

[Title of Show]
By Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell. Art in Motion Theatre Company. Directed by Lys Tickner. Koorliny Arts Centre, Kwinana, WA. Nov 17-18, 2022

[Title of Show] presented by Art in Motion Theatre Company is a touring production, with short seasons at Koorliny Arts Centre, City of Gosnells Don Russell Performing Arts Centre and the Subiaco Arts Centre - a pocket sized production, performed cabaret style in Theatre 2 at Koorliny (with cheese platters!) is well performed and staged - and has particular appeal to musical theatre nerds.

When struggling writers Jeff and Hunter decide to enter a musical theatre festival, they have just three weeks to have their entry ready. Joining with friends Heidi and Susan, and Larry on keyboard, they decide to write about “not knowing what to write about” and the process of creating the show. With lots of references to other musicals, as well as the struggles of writing and performing - on opening night you could hear laughs of recognition amongst the mostly theatrical audience.

This small ensemble is a dynamic team - with believable friendship and camaraderie. Max Conroy and Mathew Leak bounce well off each other and have nice comic timing as Jeff and Hunter, while Kate Sisley as Susan and Niamh Nichols as Heidi build a tangible relationship as the show progresses. All four sing beautifully and harmonise well under the guidance of Musical Director Jen Gadeke.

Jay Anderson as Larry - who also accompanies the production - plays with aplomb, and when allowed to speak reveals that he also has solid acting chops as well.

The setting is simple, as required by the script - and is lit well under the design of Chloe Palliser who is both lighting designer and operator and Stage Manager. The cast make the most of the limited space - with help from movement coach Claire Nichols.

This is more for the established musical theatre fans than your mate down the road seeing their first musical, but this interesting little show is fun and well performed, and well worth a look.
