A Tribute of Sorts

A Tribute of Sorts
By Ben Shostakowski. A Monsters Appear production presented by Queensland Theatre Company and Metro Arts. Bille Brown Studio, QTC. 7 -17 May, 2014.

There was magic in the 2012 La Boite Indie production of this theatrical gem. Young Shostakowski rose rapidly through the theatrical ranks and Tribute developed its own keen fan base – cult theatre, if you like.

I looked forward to this revival of the play. I was disappointed. I hasten to add the opening night audience of fans, supporters and subscribers around me sounded enthusiastic. I might have been the odd one out.

My disappointment lies in witnessing a rare new play from an inspired emerging writer develop into an awkward gangly, tacky production extended to encompass a variety of subliminal issues. The essential kernel is still there but it has become cluttered by too many short scenes and too much technical assistance.

Changing the focus from two earnest prepubescent kids putting on a humorous show about the deaths of 26 children in bizarre circumstances, to a developing affair between two adolescents creates its own internal conflicts.

Kids may play at putting on a show; adolescents are less likely to. And the adolescent angst destroyed the captivating beauty and simplicity of the original conceit.

If this should be given an opportunity to tour, Mr Shostakowski, may I suggest you go back to the original format.  As it is now, it’s rather like the Taj Mahal painted purple.
