When The Rain Stops Falling

When The Rain Stops Falling
By Andrew Bovell. Music by Tom Baynton, Javeenbah Theatre, Nerang, Gold Coast. Director: Kaela Gray. Jan 12 – 27, 2018

Javeenbah Theatre Company’s production of Andrew Bovell’s award winning play When The Rain Stops Falling receives the devilish treatment from director Kaela Gray that play needs.

The fantastic cast includes Clay Carlaw as Gabriel Law, Adrian Carr as Gabriel York, Tracy Carroll as Elizabeth Law (older), Gillian Crow as Gabrielle York (older), Tallen Hall as Andrew Price, Kelly Holden as Gabrielle York (younger), Trevor Love as Henry Law, Thian Sykes as Joe Ryan and Naomi Thompson as Elizabeth Law (younger).

A set design enhances the twists and turns of the tangled story. With a beautiful soundtrack composed by Tom Baynton, the dramatic tension grows immensely from start to finish. I am puzzled, though, at the static nature of the first act. Act one seemed to be very lacklustre and the piece didn’t progress much until very well into the second act. With some actors dropping lines and stuttering it was a slightly unnerving experience. Of course, I believe this will all fall into place when the actors have gotten comfortable in the season.

A special mention to Clay Carlaw and Naomi Thompson who stole the show with their maturity and skilful manipulation of acting choices, especially Clay, who at his young age of 18, has graced many stages and many times on the Gold Coast with his immense talent.

This is a show for the dark, the sinister and the twisted.
