Zirque La La

Zirque La La
Pink Flamingo Spiegelclub, Gold Coast. Open ended 2023 season.

The Pink Flamingo has every reason to be proud of itself. In less than 4 years it has created  9 spectacular production shows, imported circus stars from all over the world, survived the pandemic which sent many producers to the wall, PLUS earned its spot on Trip Advisor as one of the top 10% must see attractions in the WORLD. That’s quite an achievement in show business anywhere. Let alone on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

The new offering is called Zirque La La, a marriage of Cirque de Soleil – with all its excellence – and slightly naughty cabaret.

It features the inimitable high energy Rudi Testa as Jerome, the Master of Ceremonies and ringmaster. He brings a wealth of experience, a super quick wit and a photographic memory which is worth its weight in gold when it comes to remembering audience names and occasions. He also belts his way through a musical number or six, and even greets patrons at the front door when they arrive. Always in character, he is a consummate professional and, if occasionally his performance ranges from sky blue to deep purple, well, the Spiegelclub is an over 18s venue and we’re all adults. I hope the Pink Flamingo has him signed to a lifetime contract, because his loss would be catastrophic.

His consort or cohort in crime/entertainment, playing La La of the title, is a multi-talented pocket rocket of spectacular looks and talent  - Tiffany O’Connor. She sings, she dances, she looks amazing. I saw her in the very first show at the Spiegelclub and her return is a great bonus for the audience.

Spanish circus stars Desko Amat and Nini Storm ooze class and sophistication in multiple aerial spots; but the showstopper is an incredible duo where Desko, on the trapeze supports, Nini in his teeth by the end of her ponytail while they perform aerial acrobatics. Amazing entertainment.

The surprise package is Thomas Stewart as Zoot the Clown. He is actually a local Brisbane boy, but don’t underestimate him as a performer. He’s a great juggler and comic mime artist who has already conquered the Edinburgh Festival and isn’t looking for a gig with Cirque de Soleil…he’s already performed with them. It’s a pleasure to see an artist who has toured around the world return home and bring such quality to the local scene.

Christian Falcon – in costume as Balthazar – proves a dynamic dancing presence. The choreography is always great in this venue and he is accompanied by four excellent young dancers in Riley Carter, Michelle Leung, Phoebe Young and Carla Doyle.

And, uncredited, was a delightful act with a gigantic Slinky that was both witty and innovative.

As always, the costumes are sensational. But it’s the overall quality of both show and venue that proves a winner. Even the waitressing staff are perfectly co-ordinated. With plenty of audience participation and magic moments for all occasions, The Pink Flamingo has carved a very special niche for itself. And with such a commitment to excellence, there will surely be dozens more shows to come.

My only negative observation would be that the venue is not senior friendly in terms of access. There is a service lift but it’s hardly in keeping with the glitz and glamour of the club. Perhaps a stair lift with some elements of a prop…maybe a cage…or feathered wings to encompass the passenger, would make it far easier for old birds like myself to join the nest of gorgeous Flamingoes waiting upstairs…and it could easily become part of the pre-show entertainment. But, regardless, Zirque La La is must see entertainment.
