Eurobeat: Almost Eurovision - Toorak College, Victoria

Toorak College is an independent school in Mt Eliza, Victoria. Each year the school runs several productions including the major College Production (a musical or play) which involves girls from Years 9-12.
Eurobeat is great production for senior students. It parodies the special kind of over the top splendour and unashamed cheesiness which the Eurovision Song Contest does so well. Eurobeat presents 12 musical items from twelve different European countries in true Eurovision style. The music, lyrics and banter inspire performances which are kitsch, larger than life and at times bizarre. The script allows for improvisation and the inclusion of topical gags from the two often ‘naughty’ hosts. The show allows for glitz and glamour when it comes to costumes and lighting but could suit any budget. There are many singing and dancing roles in the show allowing a broad range of performers equal time in the spotlight. One of the most exciting aspects of the show for Toorak College students was the fact that it was a legitimate contest in which the audience voted for their favourite item at interval and each night a different winner was announced. The show was enormous fun for performers and audience members alike.
