Catch Me If You Can for Hayes in 2019

Truth is stranger than fiction. From the producer who brought you Cry-Baby, High Fidelity and Rent, Lauren Peters, comes the musical Catch Me If You Can. Based on the biographical hit film of the same name, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks, Catch Me If You Can will play from 19 July 2019 as part of the Hayes Theatre Co 2019 season.

Catch Me If You Can captures the astonishing true story of Frank Abagnale Jr, a precocious teenager seeking fame and fortune who runs away from home to begin an unforgettable adventure. With nothing more than his boyish charm, a big imagination and millions of dollars in forged cheques, Frank successfully poses as a pilot, a doctor and a lawyer – living the high life and winning the girl of his dreams. When Frank's lies catch the attention of FBI agent Carl Hanratty though, Carl pursues Frank in a jet-setting, cat-and-mouse chase across the US to make him pay for his crimes.

Catch Me If You Can is a musical comedy about chasing your dreams and not getting caught. Nominated for four Tony awards including Best Musical, this show was created by a Tony Award-winning team, with a book by Terrence McNally (The Full Monty, Ragtime) and a score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns).

Best known for his award-winning choreography, Cameron Mitchell (Cry-Baby, Calamity Jane) returns to the Hayes to direct his first production as well as choreograph it. Mitchell says “The movie has been one of my all-time favourites since I first saw it in 2002. After seeing the musical on Broadway I have always wanted to see it staged in Australia, so I am absolutely thrilled to be making my directorial debut with this show. The show has a fabulous score with great dance numbers as well a lot of heart; it’s one that has something for everybody.”

The remaining creative team and cast will be announced next year.
