Ashfield’s Best Little Whorehouse in Concord

Ashfield’s Best Little Whorehouse in Concord

The Tony Award Winning Musical Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is set to shock and entertain this October with Ashfield Musical Society set to bring a slice of country pie to the Inner West. The country & western musical, which is about to make a revival on Broadway later this year, is a toe-tapping, thigh slapping musical that opens on October 23rd at Concord RSL.

Presented by Ashfield Musical Society, the risqué musical is based on a true story. It tells the story of a brothel that has been operating in Gilbert, Texas for more than a century and its owner’s efforts to keep it from being shut down by a crusading television reporter. This production boasts an impressive cast led by stunning soprano Whitney Erikson playing brothel owner Miss Mona, Peter Salahni as the hot tempered but well-meaning Sherriff Earl Ed Dodd, Peter Adam as the meddlesome TV reporter Melvin P. Thorpe and a sexy line up of whores lead by Fleur Anderson as Jewel.

Winner of 6 Tonys, this hum-dinger of a musical features an original score by music and lyrics by Carol Hall Carol Hall and book by Texas author Larry L. King and Peter Masterton.

Choreographer of the show, Wendy Twiner, made her professional musical theatre debut when Whorehouse came to Sydney almost 40 years and is bringing her expertise and experience to this revival of the production.

“It's been 34 years since I was in the professional production of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and although it is a happy/sad whimsical trip down memory lane, I am very excited to be on the production side of it this time around. The show has been changed a little but still has all the toe tappin' songs and beautiful ballads like 'Bus From Amarillo', 'Hard Candy Christmas' and 'Doatsey Mae' which still brings a tear to my eye. I am especially over the moon that I could talk our director into recreating the Angelette Dolls for the show.”

Director Dennis Clements adds, “In these days where the right to marry who you wish is prominent on many peoples agendas, it is a good time to look once again at a show that highlights the hypocrisy of being told what we must do in our private lives by the media, the state or the church. BLWIT exposes that hypocrisy with humour wit, toe tapping dances and a collection of award winning songs by Carol Hall. Based on real life events that closed Texas's most famous bordello The Chicken Ranch in 1973, this production celebrates the fun we should all be having rather than the rules we are expected to follow.”

The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas opens Friday 23rd October at 8pm at Concord RSL.
