IT'S ALL SMOKE AND MIRRORS FOR THE PHANTOM AT MIRANDA.

IT'S ALL SMOKE AND MIRRORS FOR THE PHANTOM AT MIRANDA.

That's exactly how it is as ‘senior’ members Bob and Col Peet, Peter Munn, David Glance and John Widdicombe create the stage sets and props for Miranda Musical Society's  Sydney Community Theatre premiere season of The Phantom of the Opera, due to hit the stage at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre  from September 20 to 29.

The oldest of the group, 73 year old Bob is the designer of the set and props and allegedly ‘retired’ with 65 year old brother Col in 2008 from Riverside Theatres Parramatta, where they both finished distinguished careers in professional theatre notching up around 80 years in the industry between them. Apart from hands on building the set and props, Col also directs the production with a cast of more than 50 singers and dancers.

Being the premiere season of ‘Phantom’ for Community Theatre groups in Sydney, Miranda Musical Society has spared no expense in the creation of lavish sets, props and costumes for the show.

The Miranda production promises to provide all of the spectacular effects needed for Phantom of the Opera, including a giant chandelier which falls to the floor at each performance, candles which rise from the floor, a boat driven by remote control though a sea of fog, a throne from which the Phantom mysteriously disappears and another trick effect, a magic mirror though which the Phantom appears, to lure heroine Christine to his lair beneath the Paris Opera House.

The team has been building since September 2012, working an average of 4 days each per week between them. All members of the team have been involved with Miranda Musical Society for many years and still enjoy the challenge of creating something which is enjoyed by the many patrons who attend the various productions staged by the group.
