Book Nook Under New Management

Stage Whispers Magazine is excited to announce that it has saved the Book Nook Performing Arts Bookshop from closure and re-launched the business on a new website.

Founded more than 35 years ago, Book Nook was about to close due to the impact of COVID-19 earlier this year, when Stage Whispers moved to rescue the collection from a fire sale.

Book Nook is a one-stop supermarket for performing arts books from publishers worldwide.

The new website divides the collection of 2000 publications into categories including Acting and Auditions, Drama Teaching Resources, Plays, Stagecraft, Biographies, Musical Theatre, Music, Dance and Opera, Theatre History and Practice, On-Special, New Releases and more.

To celebrate the launch of the new merged businesses 15% of all sales will go to the Alliance of Australasian Performing Arts Benevolent Funds until Sept 30. Customers of Book Nook will also receive bonus subscription to Stage Whispers print or on-line.

The co-owner of Stage Whispers Magazine David Spicer said "Book Nook has been a remarkable resource for drama teachers and students over the years and its disappearance would have left a big gap in the market."

"One of the goals of our magazine has been as a resource for people putting on a musical or play, so Book Nook is a natural fit for us."

The editor and co-owner of Stage Whispers Neil Litchfield said "many years ago in my previous life as a Drama teacher, I regularly purchased the latest teaching resources from the Book Nook desk which was a feature at conferences."

Stage Whispers magazine is looking forward to expanding the variety of books and resources available on the website so it appeals to theatre doers and theatre goers.

"Like many in the arts industry we have had to pivot during this extraordinary time to stay afloat, and diversifying into a related industry is our way of keeping the ghost light on," said Mr Spicer.

"We are still continuing to (heroically) publish a magazine in print - thanks to the hard work of our team of contributors from across Australia and assistance we have received from various levels of Government."

The next edition of Stage Whispers will be a Sept-Nov publication.
