Barry Hill OAM

Stage Whispers readers outside South Australia will mainly know Barry Hill as a reviewer, occasionally also reviewed for his direction, or for his stage performances. A stalwart of Adelaide theatre, we congratulate Barry, who was honoured with the Order of Australia Medal on Australia Day, thanking him for his lengthy, passionate ‘service to the Performing Arts’. We asked Barry to share some of his theatrical highlights.

Celebrating Sixty Years of Theatre at Cronulla

As Arts Theatre Cronulla turns 60 in 2023, Publicity Officer Michele Potter shares the theatre company’s history.

Arts Theatre Cronulla is thrilled to be celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2023. Through a formula of good plays, high production values and talented performers, ATC enjoys continuing success as a community theatre group after six decades, with a wealth of productions and experiences enjoyed by cast, crew and audiences alike.

Bundaberg Players Mark Major Milestones

Since its formation in 1951, the Bundaberg Players Incorporated (formerly Bundaberg Amateur Players), has provided an annual program of entertainment, and this year they will reach a remarkable performance milestone.

Plans are progressing well for ‘Revue 500’, which will celebrate the staging of 500 productions by the Bundaberg Players Incorporated this September.

This revue will be a concert-style production featuring songs, dance, and reflective moments from the organisation’s last 499 shows.

BATS Celebrates 35 Years with The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Melbourne’s BATS Theatre Company presents The Hunchback of Notre Dame as their featured 35th Anniversary musical.

Since opening its doors 35 years ago as the Berwick Amateur Theatre Society in 1989, BATS Theatre Company has produced over 70 junior musicals, plays and musicals and has been nominated for a number of Lyrebirds awards, receiving an impressive number.

Love is in the Air at Petersham

"Over the past couple of months I've been plonking away as a rehearsal pianist for the Inner West Theatre Company's upcoming production of Strictly Ballroom. This is the stage version of the Baz Luhrmann film, and carries over the popular songs from the film plus a bunch of clever songs by Australian composer Eddie Perfect.

Willoughby Theatre Co Brings Jersey Boys to Chatswood

Willoughby Theatre Company (WTC) is bringing the musical, Jersey Boys, to the stage at The Concourse Theatre in Chatswood from May 17 to June 2, 2024.

Based on the true story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, Jersey Boys chronicles the rise of these legendary performers from the streets of New Jersey to international stardom. This acclaimed musical is renowned for its unforgettable music, compelling storytelling, and timeless appeal.

The Tin Woman at Arts Theatre Cronulla

The new production at Arts Theatre Cronulla, The Tin Woman, is written by Sean Grennan and is inspired by a true story. While it is an intimate and poignant play that explores the power of human connection, it is at the same time a heart-warming comedy that is a blend of family drama, humour and hope.

Kiss Me, Kate at GSOV

Tony Award-winning 1940s musical comedy Kiss Me, Kate, from music genius Cole Porter (Anything Goes, Fifty Million Frenchmen) with a score of witty, hummable hits paired with a script from from Broadway legends Sam and Bella Spewack (Leave It To Me!, My Three Angels) is being presented by Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Victoria from 2-5 May 2024 at the Alexander Theatre, Clayton.
