Community Theatre Seasons 2026

Community Theatre Seasons 2026

Already some companies across Australia are promising dress-up performances reminiscent of popular late-night movie screenings over the last five decades.

The Rocky Horror Show has been around for 50 years, but professional revivals have been so frequent that it’s never previously been released for amateur productions. Now, in 2026 it’s a hot new pick on the community theatre circuit, as companies line up to do ‘The Time Warp’.

Probably the most popular musical on the circuit, though, is a carry-over of the biggest new release from 2025, the jukebox musical & Juliet, which puts a new what-if spin on Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet, re-written by Mrs Shakespeare, asking what if Juliet hadn’t killed herself at the end of her illustrious husband’s play.

Meanwhile, the big release of the previous year, Come From Away, also a popular choice throughout 2025, still has numerous companies lined up on the runway to stage the show in 2026.

Other recent commercial shows to take their first steps onto community stages this year include Sister Act and Jagged Little Pill, amidst a mix of classic musicals and popular contemporary hits, from Gilbert and Sullivan to Rodgers and Hammerstein and various Disney favourites.

The repertoire of non-musical shows across our community theatre stages is far more eclectic and varied. Agatha Christie whodunnits, the perennial box office staples of so many companies, remain popular, though relatively new Australian comedy thriller Midnight Murder at Hamlington Hall is proving popular new addition in the genre.

At your local theatre, you’re more than likely to see both Australian and international plays, ranging comedies and dramas, and from Shakespeare through to recent local and international hits.

While several companies are celebrating various anniversaries in 2026, it’s sad to report the demise of one of Melbourne’s longest running community theatre institutions, MLOC Productions, which closed in it’s 80th year, 2025, after more than 170 shows.

The following listings were compiled by Neil Litchfield and Kimberley Shaw.
