Miranda's School of Rock Musical

Miranda's School of Rock Musical

Miranda Musical Theatre Company will present School of Rock the musical at the Pavilion Performing Arts Centre in Sutherland this September 13-17, 2023.

Cast your mind back to 2003. It’s a big year for music and the arts. Beyonce has just released her first solo album, while Apple launched iTunes, catapulting ‘In Da Club’ to the top of the charts. Chicago takes home Best Picture at the Oscars while Wicked is opening on Broadway. And into this climate, comes one of the most celebrated music-movies of all time, School of Rock.

In the 20 years since this iconic film’s release, it has become a cult-classic, inspiring spin-off TV Shows, and even a musical, which opened on Broadway in 2015, with additional music written by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Based on the script written by Mike White (now of White Lotus fame), and featuring songs from the original film, School of Rock the musical is filled with a whole lot of rock, reason, and rhyme! School of Rock features 14 original new numbers by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The story follows wannabe rock star Dewey Finn (played by Philby McIntosh) who decides to pose as his schoolteacher roommate in order to make some extra cash working at a preppy elementary school, Horace Green. However, he soon finds the band he always dreamed of in his straight-A pupils, whom he turns into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. All he has to do is charm the glasses off school principal Rosalie Mullins (Bernice Keen) and get the kids into the Battle of the Bands competition!

Miranda Musical Theatre Company’s (MMTC) production of School of Rock features a cast of 26, including 13 local students who all attend local Sutherland Shire schools including Innaburra, Shire Christian School, and Heathcote High School.

At the helm of this production is Bridget Keating-McIntosh, who makes her directorial debut for MMTC with School of Rock. Keating has produced, performed in, and directed many shows and major events across Southern Sydney for the past 18 years, including numerous community events such as the Australia Day Carss Bush Park and Lunar New Year Hurstville.

She is supported by Musical Director Peter Sampson, Choreographer Kristen Hockley, and Assistant Director Charmaine Gibbs, all of whom bring a wealth of experience across both professional and community theatre productions in Sydney.

On the production, Keating says, “We are absolutely ready to ‘stick it to the man’ this September at the Pavilion Performing Arts Centre! We have assembled an exceptionally talented cast of both children and adults who bring such a fresh and energetic performance to the stage, it will be a delight for audiences of all ages. Some of our students will even play their instruments live throughout the show, so you will not want to miss this rock spectacle. Whether you love the original film, or you’ve never seen it before in your life, this show will remind you of that one teacher who changed your life for the better. We cannot wait for you all to see our production of School of Rock.”
