Modern Cairns Pirates into Bonding

Modern Cairns Pirates into Bonding

Cairns Choral Society returns to the Stage on 28 September 2012 with a modern version of Gilbert & Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance.

While rehearsals are in full swing and taken very seriously by the cast, ranging in age from 17 to 70, they also take the time to encourage bonding between cast members and promote a sense of fun. After Friday night rehearsals, cast members can often be found enjoying an ice-cream sundae or late night burger at a local McDonald's. On Sundays cast members bring a plate of food to rehearsal and enjoy a buffet style shared lunch during their (short!) lunch. It's small things like this help cast members get to know each other better - and the tight-knit bond is evident on stage.

The cast recently entered a themed float in the Cairns Festival Grand Parade to promote the show to the Cairns Community. The Cairns esplanade was lined with thousands of locals and tourists who flocked to every available vantage point to watch this exciting, vibrant and colourful event. And the cast enjoyed the atmosphere just as much.

The pirate costumes were a hit with the crowd (especially the kids!), and the girls' bright gold polo shirts couldn't be missed. The cast also posed "Usain Bolt" style in a bid to attract the Jamaican Gold Medalist to Cairns (see the "Bolt to Cairns" Facebook page!).

The cast enjoyed a sausage sizzle and a drink at the Cairns Choral Society hall after the parade, and followed it all up by an early rehearsal the next day.
