New Enemy of the People for Pavilion

New Enemy of the People for Pavilion

Two brothers, Thomas and Peter Stockmann, one a doctor, the other their town’s mayor, join forces to support the opening of a medicinal bath-house. At first the project seems wildly successful. Tourists, money and prestige pour in hand over fist. But then Thomas discovers the bath-house’s waters are polluted -- and the people who trusted them are falling ill. As the magnitude of the disaster is revealed, one by one the town’s people start to take sides, testing loyalties to breaking point.

And so the drama unfolds in Henrik Ibsen’s biting and politically topical drama, Enemy of the People, presented in a world premiere new translation at Castle Hill’s Pavilion Theatre from June 14 by local playwright Jeremy Johnson.

‘Fashions may come and go with the passing decades, but the one thing you can always count on is the constancy of human nature,’ says director Jewell Johnson. ‘The themes of this play – courage, honour and integrity versus greed, cowardice and venal self-interest - are as relevant today as when Ibsen first wrote it. And it’s a hugely exiciting honour to present this new translation of the play to an Australian audience.’

Enemy of the People opens at the Pavilion Theatre, Doran Drive, Castle Hill, NSW on June 14th and runs until July 6th. Performances are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights at 8.15 pm, with a Sunday matinee at 4.30 pm. Tickets are $26.00, concession $21.00.
