A Sneak Peek at the Calendar Girls Calendar
An anticipated event in the Henry Lawson Theatre theatrical calendar (pun very much intended) debuted on Friday, 19th September! Under the direction of Nicole Smith, the play Calendar Girls promises to tickle your funny bones, tug on your heartstrings, and possibly inspire a little mischief of your own.
The stage has transformed with charming British warmth and the show that boasts a cast of characters more delightful than the best Victoria sponge. Expect laughs, yes, but also the solidarity that wraps around you like a cozy Sunday jumper.
Now, you might wonder, how does a humble group of Yorkshire ladies go from jam jars to risque in a single, scandalous swoop?
“What begins as an innocent effort to raise money for a worthy cause, giving to leukemia research in the wake of personal loss, soon takes a riotous twist. Instead of the expected tea towel drives or bake sales, these resourceful women hatch a plan that's as risqué as it is brilliant—posing for a calendar wearing little more than their cheeky smiles and strategically placed baked goods,” Smith said of the show.
In the spirit of the real Calendar Girls, Henry Lawson Theatre is donating money from the sale of its own calendar to the Cancer Council. “We have received a wonderful response over the weekend,” President Rebecca Fletcher added, “and we are well on our way to raising $3,000 to donate to the Cancer Council.”
The actresses stepping into these courageous characters' shoes (or perhaps out of them) promise to bring their own shine to this already luminous production. “They remind us of the power of community and friendship in the most entertaining way possible,” said Smith.
It's all quick winks and clever cover-ups, proving once again that leaving a little something to the imagination is always in vogue.
So, don your best WI hat, embrace a sense of adventure, and join us for a show that celebrates courage, friendship, and the liberating power of seizing life with both hands (while deftly covering what must be covered). Prepare for an evening of hilarity, heart, and a bit of harmless hullabaloo.
At Henry Lawson Theatre, Werrington NSW until October 3, 2025
