New Arts Centre Program to Fund Music Theatre Development Across Australia

The Arts Centre, Melbourne, in conjunction with the Australia Council, is launching a national two year $300,000 Music Theatre Development Program that aims to discover Australia’s next musical theatre hit. The program will provide financial and artistic support for up to five new music theatre performances to be developed to workshop stage and showcased at the Arts Centre in January 2011.

The New Music Theatre Development Program has been created as a result of the success of the Arts Centre’s FULL TILT program, which focuses on developing and presenting work by independent artists and ensembles.

The funding for the two-year program aims to uncover original contemporary music theatre projects with a compelling and original theatrical premise, from small scale, grunge and rock music theatre to contemporary performances. They need to be original Australian compositions with a creative team attached and suited to a venue up to 400 seat capacity.

Projects are invited from across Australia. An industry panel will select up to five projects to undergo creative development in Melbourne in November / December 2010. These projects will then be presented in a two-week public showcase at the Arts Centre’s Fairfax Studio in January 2011.

Each selected project will be assigned a mentor from outside their own creative team, as well as receiving wages for artists, a venue to work in and production support. Applications close Wednesday 12 May.
