New Australian Musicals Wanted

New Australian Musicals Wanted

Cabaret to grunge, rock opera to musicals – the hunt for Carnegie 18 music theatre creators.

After an almost sold-out 2011 season, the Arts Centre is beginning its search for new music theatre ensembles for the upcoming season of Carnegie 18.

A new music theatre development project funded by the Arts Centre in conjunction with the Australia Council and the Arts Centre, Carnegie 18 aims to uncover and support bold, innovative thinking in contemporary music theatre across Australia.

The first Carnegie 18 showcase in January 2011 was an overwhelming success and featured four new music theatre projects – Contact!, Curtains, RAWK and Every Angel is Terrible.

The Arts Centre is now on the hunt for daring and exciting new music theatre makers to be involved in the next round of new music theatre developments for the 2012 season.

“We are looking for original contemporary music theatre projects with original music, a compelling and original theatrical premise and the core creative team already attached,” explained Vanessa Pigrum, Manager, Creative Development for the Arts Centre.

“It doesn’t have to be a ‘musical’ in the Broadway sense. It could be anything from song cycle to cabaret to grunge rock opera to musicals. We’re looking for exciting new ideas that will define the term ‘music theatre’ for the future,” she added.

Financial and artistic support will be provided for applicants and their creative teams, who will undergo creative development in Dec 2011 / Jan 2012 in preparation for a showcase season in the Arts Centre’s Fairfax Studio in late Jan 2012.

Applications close 27 May 2011. For further information, go to www.theartscentre.com.au/newmusictheatre
