Nick and Nora Next for Neglected Musicals

Nick and Nora Next for Neglected Musicals

Never staged since its original Broadway run, Neglected Musicals will stage the notorious Broadway flop Nick & Noraas their next musical presentationon Monday 8 August at 2pm and 8pm at the Darlinghurst Theatre.

A musical comedy-mystery, Nick & Nora follows the trail of Nick and Nora Charles (Justin Smith and Lisa Adam), a former detective and his rich, playful wife, who undertake the business of solving a murder case mostly for the fun of it. Nick and Nora Charles, characters created by Dashiell Hammett in his novel The Thin Man, went on to inspire six films, a radio show, and a television series. The original Broadway production, directed by Arthur Laurents opened on December 8, 1991 at the Marquis Theatre. It ran for 71 previews and just nine performances.

“The musical of Nick & Nora is infamous; the show just kept previewing and never seemed like it was ever going to open and Spiderman: Turn of the Dark has only just recently passed its held record of previews. A musical based on The Thin Man is a great idea and we are so lucky that the late Arthur Laurents found the time to find a script in his apartment last year, giving us this wonderful opportunity” said producer Michelle Guthrie

The cast of includes Lisa Adam (Jersey Boys) in the role of Nora Charles and Justin Smith (Billy Elliot) as Nick Charles with Octavia Barron-Martin, Blake Erickson, Chris Horsey, Debora Krizak, Josie Lane, James Lee, Kate Parry, John Rowe and Matt Young.

“I've always loved The Thin Man films, I love Hollywood, and I love the 1930s,” said Director CJ Johnson.  “Nick and Nora captures some of the combined craziness of those films, that place and that period. There's drinking, blackmail and murder, obviously, but there's also corruption, cocaine and rampant shenanigans. Besides Nick and Nora, the characters are all 1930s Hollywood types - movie stars, directors, producers, teamsters - and morality's not a great priority!”

Nick and Nora Charles, are a flirtatious married couple who banter wittily as they solve a Hollywood Murder. Nick is a hard drinking retired detective and Nora a wealthy heiress.  Songs include; Is There Anything Better Than Dancing?, Swell, As Long As You're Happy, Men, Busy Night at Lorraine's and Boom Chicka Boom.

Music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Richard Maltby Jrand book by Arthur Laurents, based on characters created by Dashiell Hammett in his novel The Thin Man. Director: CJ Johnson. Musical: Director Craig Renshaw.
