Priscilla for US National Tour

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert the Musical is set to hit the road in America. The show’s producers have announced that Priscillawill commence a US National Tour in Fall 2012, with the first city and date to be announced shortly.

The Australian musical has been the highest grossing new musical on Broadway, regularly taking well in excess of $900,000 at the box office each week at the Palace Theatre, breaking the magic $1 million once. The show’s Broadway cast recording, released in April, entered Billboard’s Top Cast Album Chart at number 1.

While the show missed out on a Tony Award nomination for Best Musical, it has been nominated for Best Musical by the Drama Desk, Drama League and Outer Critics Circle.

The nomination tally is also rising steadily for the show’s Australian star and costume designers, including the show’s two Tony nominations. Tony Sheldon has now received several nominations in New York’s upcoming awards, most recently adding a Tony nomination to Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Drama League nominations. Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner have also received Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominations for Best Costume Design. The late Ross Coleman has also been nominated for an Outer Critics Award for Best Choreography.

Priscilla opened in West End in 2009 and is currently booking at London’s Palace Theatre until January 2012.
