The Addams Family

The Addams Family
By Andrew Lippa, Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. Zealous Productions. Directed by Michael McCall. The Regal Theatre, Subiaco, WA. July 7-10, 2022

Zealous Productions’ The Addams Family returned to the Regal Theatre for a short encore season. Featuring most of the ‘original’ cast, this production was possibly even more slick than its 2021 predecessor, and delighted its audiences.

Beautiful performances from returning family members Brendan Hansen and Dixie Johnstone as Gomez and Morticia Addams - a tangible relationship that plays out with great passion, Georgia Unsworth and Elliot Peacock as siblings Wednesday and Pugsley - both with vibrant portrayals and Joshua Firman, continuing to light up the stage as Fester. Rachel Monamy and Chris McCafferty made welcome returns as Alice and Mal Beineke.

New cast members brought some fresh interpretations to their roles. Matthew Arnold, stepping sideways to play Lucas Beineke, brought an earnest freshness to this young romantic college boy, while Adam Perryman was suitably imposing as Lurch (previously played by Matthew). Morgan Cowling was a raucously gorgeous Grandma. They were supported very well by a small but strong ensemble of Ancestors - including some familiar faces for returning viewers.

This season, I had the pleasure of attending the relaxed matinee performance. Initiated by founder of Zealous Productions, Dixie Johnstone, the special matinee performance allows people who may otherwise be hesitant to attend the theatre in a more inclusive performance. The show included two highly animated AUSLAN interpreters on stage for the entire performance, an audio description service as well as a tactile tour for those who are visually impaired, additional access to accessible toileting, and downloadable social stories about the show and the venue. The houselights remained low rather than out, allowing for easier movement throughout the theatre, and more extreme lighting and sound effects were muted.

I would highly recommend this session in future Zealous productions, to anyone who struggles with some aspects of live theatre, and as a person who does not need accommodations, I found it enhanced rather than diminished by viewing pleasure. I would love to see this session better attended, as it was lovely to see a more diverse audience absolutely loving the experience.

Zealous have quickly established their place as an important part of the Perth Arts scene. Great to see this short returning treasure and I look forward to seeing their next offering.
