Adults Only Magic Show

Adults Only Magic Show
Showmen Productions. Adelaide Fringe. The May Wirth at Gluttony, Adelaide. Feb 21 – March 19, 2023.

My uncle was a magician, and I remember him taking me, when young, to the magicians’ secret club, which was (and maybe still is) in an underground clubroom in the western suburbs of Adelaide.

While he never disclosed the secrets of his trade, he did instil a love of magic that has remained with me ever since.

In Adults Only Magic Show, Sam and Justin present sixty minutes of adult humour, sleight-of-hand, illusions, mentalism, and a chance of nudity. It all happens later in the evening and is extremely well done!

They have been working together for ten years and it shows. Their act has the feeling of two performers who perform as one; the sense that they have 'got each other’s backs', even if things don’t turn out as expected.

We are warned there will be audience participation. Sit wherever you like, there is no seat safe from these boys. Sam and Justin will seek and find you, wherever you are.  However, each 'volunteer' is rewarded with a drinks card for their efforts.

The first act involving an audience member involves taking his phone and placing it inside a paper bag, along with three other identical bags, into which are placed blocks of wood the same size, shape, and weight as a standard phone. The bags are then shuffled, and the ill-fated audience member is asked to guess which bag her phone is NOT in - and then that bag is smashed. This happens until there was just one bag left and then - you will have to see the show to discover the result.

Sam and Justin are also masters of escapology. They attempt to escape from ropes and a straitjacket, getting themselves into some unusual positions before their final reveal.

I have seen a lot of card tricks, but Sam’s, which are shown on a large screen, are mystifying. There is also a 'locked box' reveal about what Justin’s ultimate date would look like, involving messages from audience members mysteriously ending up in sealed locations. I could hear audience members saying “How???” and I must admit, I couldn’t work it out either. This is a measure of the quality of their magic.

There was an illusion that didn’t go as planned. However, Sam and Justin took it in their stride and moved on.

Adults Only Magic Show is an hour of mystery, magic mirth and just a touch of titillation to add to the fun!
