Am I Doing This Right?

Am I Doing This Right?
The Improv Conspiracy Theatre. Midsumma. Level 1, 19 Meyers Place Melbourne. 2-5 February, 2023

Jayden Masciulli, Simon Hawkings and Allen Dorsey gather the audience and carry them through a frisky and hilarious exploration of the anxieties of being a “functioning gay person in Melbourne”.

The sketches in the show include musical comedy, “Every Gay Apartment Looks The Same”, intimate examinations of the doctor/patient relationship, friendship and the gay community, the difficulties of night clubs and the casting experience, a quiz show, commercial exploitation of various anxieties by people presenting Masterclasses, talking down a suicidal person and a unique strategy to win “Survivor”.

The pace is driving with quick changes of clothes on the side of the stage The actors easily create a really diverse range of settings with a look, a chair or a piece of clothing and purposeful use of multimedia, sound and lighting. Their confident use of the stage and the whole space provides a strong base for presentation of their subject matter.

The actors immediately established a strong relationship with the partisan audience and there were many funny asides and direct engagements with the audience. The combination of the sketches is balanced and satisfying.

The time flew by with laugher, engagement and wry recognition and the conclusion at the end that they are ‘doing it right’ is entirely correct!
