An American in Paris

An American in Paris
By George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin and Craig Lucas. GWB and the Australian Ballet. Directed by Christopher Wheeldon. Crown Theatre Perth, WA. July 9-27, 2022

Perth is the last stop on the Australian tour for GWB and the Australian Ballet’s An American in Paris. This production, like its Broadway and West End predecessors, is directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, who won multiple awards for this production. Featuring absolutely stunning choreography, this show is also spectacularly staged, and stars Broadway and West End leading actors Robbie Fairchild and Leanne Cope.

Interestingly and unusually, Opening Night in Perth saw the appearance of Alternate Leads, Australians Cameron Holmes and Dimity Azoury as Jerry Mulligan and Lise Dassin. Holmes is a dynamic and loveable Jerry, who brings charm to the role, sings superbly, and dances up a storm. Azoury inhabits Lise superbly, and is very believable as the woman whose personality and beauty have won the affections of three young men. Her dancing is exquisite, and while she is vocally lighter than we would expect, is still a joy to watch.

The other suitors are Sam Ward, very impressive as Henri Baurel, and Jonathan Hickey, loveable as Adam Hochberg. Ashleigh Rubenach is outstanding as American benefactor Milo Davenport - a stellar performance. Anne Wood is lovely in the complex role of Madame Baurel, with Jeremy Stanford, joining the cast for the Perth run, is strong as her husband Monsieur Baurel.

A strong and very busy ensemble work hard throughout, and Perth audience will notice several WAAPA graduates, some in their first post-graduate production. Timing on the first weekend was not always at perfection, perhaps unsurprising given some cast changes and less than a week’s turnover from the Sydney season.

Technically this show is spot on, with Bob Crowley set and costume design moving with perfection. The set, and projections are complex, at times appearing to dance, and merging beautifully with Natasha Katz gorgeous lighting design and the sound design of Kelvin Gedye. Costumes are beautiful and plentiful, and this show is a visual treat.

A locally sourced orchestra sound superb.

Great to see an international production, with a strong Australian cast, back in Perth. An American in Paris is a must see for fans of the film, lovers of dance and those who love a visually strong production.
