Mr Bailey’s Minder

Mr Bailey’s Minder
By Debra Oswald. Melville Theatre, WA. Directed by Vanessa Jensen. 26 Apr - 12 May, 2018

Mr Bailey is a cantankerous, unlikeable alcoholic, who also happens to be a great artist and an Australian living treasure. Only one of his many children is willing to help him, and then only at arm’s length. She hires Therese, a girl with a checkered background, to be Leo Bailey’s live-in minder.

This well-directed production features a strong ensemble cast. Alan Kennedy is convincing as the angry and drunk Leo, who despite his age and inability to care for himself, has an amazing journey of self discovery - expertly drawn. Sjaan Lucas shines as Therese Laurence, who finds her forté in caring for the grouchy, unpleasant old man.

Jayma Knudson plays Leo’s daughter Margo with depth and understanding. The character Karl is an unconventional leading man, but Phil Barnett is strong and very likeable as the larrikin tradesman Jeff Hansen takes ten minutes away from stage managing the show, to appear in a brief but effective cameo as conman Gavin.

Vanessa and Lars Jensen’s set is very atmospheric (although the colour of the beautiful feature wall is not a match for Sydney rock walls) and the show is subtly but effectively lit. The use of Australian music throughout was a great choice.

Mr Bailey’s Minder tells a great story with excellent acting in a well measured production. In a very busy theatrical period, it is worth prioritising Mr Bailey’s Minder as a “must see” choice.
